Hangi at Faith Academy
Hi, I'm Daniel and my school, Faith Academy are having a hangi. We're learning about Maori culture, so a hangi is a good way to learn how Maori people cook. The adults do the work. In a hangi hot stones cook food, and heat is trapped inside. First we dig a hole. Wood is then placed on. Larger bits go on the bottom. Clunk, plunk, crack! Stones are going on top. That's enough for today. It's time to go home. I hope it doesn't rain.
The fire is huge and hot. I can feel the heat from a distance! It's hot enough now, so we'll put the fire out. Splash! The fire went out. The adults quickly put leaves on. They have to be careful, because it is very, very, very hot. They have to act quickly because the heat will escape. Wet cloths covered in dirt will prevent this. Wow! It looks like a mound of dirt. I think that if a robber came along, he wouldn't be able to steal the food because it looks like a pile of dirt.
Oh no! It's raining. We have to go inside. At 1:45pm I got called out to help with the food because I had brought a raincoat.
Room one is getting their food. It smells nice. I want it. I NEED it. Before room two came, Mrs McGregor sent me back because she had nothing for me to do.
Finally! It's time for room four to get their food.
The food is really hot. We had kumara, potato, stuffing, pumpkin and chicken. I liked the stuffing the most, but it was all TREMENDOUSLY, FABULOUSLY, TERRIFFICLY, MARVELLOUSLY, FANTASTICALLY YUMMY!

Hangi
It's Thursday, we are at school. Some adults are on the field digging a hole for a hangi. They are making us a hangi for tomorrow, it will be cool. T the moment they are stacking wood high over the whole. We watched the adults put the 3 rocks over the wood. Tomorrow morning at 6 am they will be lighting it. We will have to wait until tomorrow until we can see some action. We can't wait to try it. On Friday we come to school. The fire is already going. Many adults are already there. They have put sacks in barrels of water. The bell rings, so we head off to class. Not long after we get called out to see them put out the fire.
Once we got out on the field the adults put out the fire. They then put cabbage leaves over the hot rocks. They have to work fast so the steam doesn't get away. They then put in all the food. It was wrapped in tinfoil. After the food was in they put more cabbage leaves on top. Then the adults put the sacks over the leaves. They then put all the dirty earth black on the top so it covered the whole hole. Now there was no steam escaping. "It should take about 3 hours" Mr McGregor said.
It was raining at 2 o'clock, so we went over to the shed to get the food. We all came back to class to eat it. "Yum", it was the nicest veggies most of us had ever tasted.
We all like the hangi. It was a really nice lunch. We all want to have another one sometime.

Sheep
This poster is about sheep. We did lots of hard work and we did lots of research! This was all part of our action learning. We learnt lots about sheep. It took quite a long time to make the poster. We used lots of wool and paper, that's for sure! We think our presentation went well. by Alannah

Space Story
I woke up one morning and thought I am going to have a boring day. I hopped out of bed to go get my breakfast. When I got out to the kitchen I asked my mum what's for breakfast? "Honey puffs""All right then" I replied. So I ate my breakfast and went to my room.
When I got to my room I turned my radio on. I was lying on my bed when I herd we could go have a free tour of a space ship. Mum and Dad went out in the Mercedes Benz. I thought maybe I could take dads motorbike because I ride my own motorbike. I got dressed and got on dad's motorbike. Off I went. I was doing well apart from the fact that I was too short. When in got there I had a look around the space ship. Then I thought why don't I have a look inside, so I did. I was looking around the space ship when suddenly it took off! I tried to escape but I couldn't.
I met some astronauts but I didn't understand there names. One of them took me to the room I would be staying in. It was amazing there was a corner that was like a kitchen and in another corner was my bed, it was like a lounge, but instead of a TV the wall was a screen. Where you could see into space. We then landed on the moon and I wore a space suit. One of the astronauts took me out to the moon and gave me a camera to take pictures of my trip. It was amazing. We were on the moon for 8 hours, I loved it. We had to get back on the ship.
When I got back into the space ship I went into my room and got something to eat. When I finished eating I sat down to look out into space when some astronauts came into tell me "we are on our way to mars, then we are going home".
I said "that's fine with me" After a while we landed on mars I got out of the spaceship and looked around and I thought it was beautiful but it doesn't look the same as the pictures we see on earth.
I took some photos and had a look around then we had to get back in the ship and I fell asleep. Then I woke up in my bed and found a picture of me on the moon. So I thought it was a dream but it must have been real.

Space Travel
It all started when.... My mother got a job and she got Accepted. Her job was..... THE SPACE CRUDLE!!!I was out of my mind. I went up to see Mum." That's crazy you working at a space crudle.I don't think so." "Honey I know it's weird but that is only job that I think I would be good at it. Anyway I've always wanted to do it. It is past your bed time I will come up in a minute". I fell asleep before mum came up.
I the morning I came down stairs to have my breakfast. My favorite day Saturday I smelt bacon and eggs, yummmy. I asked my Mum something, "Mum why do you want to do this job anyway? There are other jobs you can do".
"I know that there are other jobs I can do but I have always wanted to do this job "
"Fine then you can see the space ship well then go and get ready then we will go" I ran up stairs got dressed then hopped inside the car. We drove off. I was so excited!!!
When we got there I saw the rocket. It was so big that I reckoned it was bigger than big it was ginoumas.I stood there amazed. My Mum budged me "Come on it is going to blast off so don't get too close!!!".
"Okay." Then I heard:
WE ARE GOING TO BLAST OFF IN 5 MINUTES
All of a sudden I had an idea, I thought I should go on there and go into space. So I hopped on board and I heard them count down 5,4,3,2,1, blast off!!!I was so scared that I thought that I would never see my Mum again. But then all of a sudden I heard a person say, "Stop the space ship, there is a kid on board." Someone found me and took me outside my Mum was there worrying about me. I ran up to her and said "Mum that was fun but I am very sorry", and Mum said "That's okay but I am never taking you here again"
"Good" I said. And we started to walk home.

The Olympics.
The Olympic sport such fun! It all started way back in 776 B.C a long time ago that was! The Olympics is a time for countries to get together and compete. The Ancient Olympic games were to honour a false Greek God could Zeus.
In class we studied the Olympics. When we studied the Olympics we studied countries that competed in the Olympics. I choose to study China. At the beginning China was coming first but at the end USA came first and China came 2nd which is still pretty good.
The sad bit to the Olympics is the cheaters. In the Olympics there are a lot of people who take drugs which is not good! This year most people got caught taking drugs which is good!
New Zealand came 24th out of a 202 countries! Pierre de Coubertin said at a conference in Paris the most important thing in competing at the Olympics is not to win but try your best in competing.
The Olympic flag was first introduced to the Olympics in the year 1920. The flag is shown with 5 rings linked together. Also in 1920 the Olympic oath was introduced to the Olympics. The oath was that ALL WARS WERE TO STOP! This way, people could travel safely to where the Olympics were being held.
This year the Olympics had 10,000 athletes competing at the Olympic Games.
In class we studied the Olympics. While we studied the Olympics studied a sport that was at the Olympics I choose to study the weight lifting. Why I choose the weight lifting is because one Sunday morning I got up and watched the weight lifting. I like seeing and hearing the effort they put into lifting so many kilograms.
This year the organisers expected about 4 billion people to watch on TV!
In Athens 202 countries competed. WOW that's a lot!!!
The Olympics were a tradition to honour a Greek god called Zeus. On the opening ceremony it showed lots of gods for example Cupid ,Cupid is the God of love. What he does is shoots people, they look at one another and fall in love.
Well all in all the Olympics have gone well!

The Athens 2004 Olympic games
The Athens 2004 Olympic Games have been fantastic. Greece has put on an amazing show. Everything has been perfect at the home of the Olympics in Greece.
In 776BC the Ancient Olympic Games started in Olympia and went for 179 years until 394AD
The modern Olympic Games started when a man from France called Baron Pierre de Coubertin suggested at a conference in France that we bring back the Olympic Games.
But now in 2004 the Olympics are very different. Instead of just one footrace from one end of the stadium to the other; there are many events and sports like discus, javelin, swimming, cycling and running.
But of course, the Olympics would not be the Olympics without medals. This year the United States of America got 103 medals. If American swimmer Michael Phelps was a country he would be about 15th on the medal table with 6 gold and 2 bronze in swimming.
On the medal table New Zealand are 24th with a total of 5. We have 3 gold, 2 silver and bronze; well none, nothing zilch nada zero. Although that is O.K, after all, that is 5 medals for 4, ooo, ooo people. Take India for example: one silver medal. All our rowers made their finals so that's really good and 24th on the final medal table is great.
Sarah Ulmer beat the world record in women's individual pursuit (again!)
The Evers-Swindell twins continued their 3 year unbeaten run in the women's double skulls.
Hamish Carter and Bevan Docherty doubled our medal tally with a sensational first and second in the men's triathlon.
And Ben Fouhy came second in the men's k1 1,000m kayaking.
So the games of the 28th Olympiad, Athens 2004 have been and gone and we are all looking forward to the Chinese version in 2008.
