To all students: I will no longer be checking Science Badge work before school in the mornings. If you have Science Badges that need to be checked please tell the attendance monitor that you need to see me.
LAST CALL FOR EXCHANGE OF SPORTS/PE UNIFORMS
The new uniform has arrived. Please come and exchange the tops that have the "Mitre" slogan in the middle for tops without the slogan. Our uniform was never meant to have a slogan on it. We decided to leave the slogan that was on the side but when the next batch came with a larger slogan right in the middle we asked for them to be replaced. These will have the slogan removed as far as possible and be sold as seconds at $15 a shirt.
There are seconds currently available so please make use of this opportunity.
EARTH WORM "TEA"
Sorry last weeks sale got washed out with the weather being a bit changeable, please buy some worm tea tomorrow for your pot plants! - selling tomorrow after school in the car park. It's already diluted (1:10) so it's ready to use at $1 for 2 litres. We are saving to buy another worm farm. We will be selling worm farms as an operational farm, (including the worms!) these will be available towards the end of the term and will cost +-$170 - $10 of this will go to the school towards the 2nd worm farm for the school. Please let the office or Mrs Jonker know if you would like to order a worm farm so that we know how many to prepare.
Thanks from the Earthworm farmers.
HEALTH COMMITTEE
The "Health Committee" met last week and have begun dealing with some of the concerns. Steps have been taken to deal with bulling; please bring any future incidences to the attention of a teacher or the Principal.
More information will follow about other endeavours as they are completed.
Please continue with the effort made to improve the contents of the lunch boxes and for ensuring that it is in a lunch box.
FINAL FUNDRAISING APPEAL
All those interested in assisting with fundraising for the Gym are to please meet with Mrs Jonker in Room 5 for max 30 min at 3:15 pm on Friday afternoon ( 27th July) to discuss the ideas that have come in and further actions.
BIBLE GUIDES FOR STUDENTS
Many of our students do read their Bibles and are endeavouring to be faithful in their study of the Word but often they find it difficult as they do not have a guide to follow or help with understanding.
Scripture Union does have a range of notes available for various age groups that are ideal in establishing a routine in the reading of God's word independently. "Hotshots" are for 8-9 year olds, "Snapshots" are for 9-10 year olds and "One Up" for 11-14 year olds. The guides for July-Sept, cost $9.95 each or $32 pa, have a look at the SU website: www.scriptureunion.org.nz for more information or fill in the application for a free trial copy!.
LATE STUDENTS AND D-MERITS
It has been the expectation that students are at school at 8:55am when the first bell goes so that they are seated and ready to start the lesson at 9:00 when the second bell goes, if they are late they were given a D- Merit. This system has however caused some problems especially when it is not the students fault and the same students continue to arrive late. We have decided to try a different system; students will not be D merited instead they make up the time they have missed at lunch time. Late students will take their lunch and News-boards with them to the library at the beginning of lunch time where they will be supervised to complete their work before having their lunch. To avoid this please ensure that your child is at school on time as the interruption to the lesson does affect other students too and it is not convenient for teachers to meet with you after the bell has rung.
LOST & FOUND.
LOST: Michaela has lost her new style PE/Sports shorts (red & blue.) They are named. If you find them could you please return them to Michaela in Room 1. Thank you.
PHOTOGRAPHY FUNDRAISER
Please mark your calendars for the 19/20th of October as the school will be having fundraising photography sessions with well known local Photographer Dori. This is a great opportunity to update your family portraits or maybe to think about early Christmas gifts? More detailed information will follow in the next few weeks newsletters.

Earthworm Farmers
Local worm expert Lisa Talbot and the team made a presentation to the school at assembly. The team have been collecting food scraps at lunch times. At this stage half a bucket full a day is enough for the +- 2000 worms to cope with in the worm farm. As the number increases they could cope with up to a bucket a day. The worms are special composting worms called "Tiger Worms"; they are not ordinary earthworms. The worms produce "castings" which will be given to the vegetable garden team. They also produce liquid manure which is great for indoor plants!

GOAL SETTING
Last term students set goals for the first 2 terms; both personal and academic goals. Please remind students to review their goals and keep the sheet displayed in a prominent place.
NUMERACY PASSPORTS
To strengthen students Numeracy skills and to encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning; we are introducing "Numeracy Passports" starting with Room 5. Students have been issued with a "Passport" booklet and a set of cards needed for the first stage of the activities. Students have to test their own Numeracy skills and sign off the activity in the booklet.
A parent must then please check the activity and also sign in the appropriate place followed by the teacher/aide. Merits will be awarded for the completion of each stage. Students are expected to look after the "Passports" and the cards carefully as the "Passport" becomes part of the student's records while the cards will be re-used. The success of this initiative will determine if we extend this system to other classes.

NEW PE/SPORTS UNIFORM
Uniforms: From Term 1 2007 all students representing Faith Academy will be required to be in the new PE Uniform. Students will need either the old or new blue and red uniform; the old PE uniform will not be permitted, please order uniforms at the office (8:00am-12pm). The old PE uniform will continue to be phased out during 2007 & 2008 but can still be used for PE at school. Once existing old PE uniform stock runs out we will not be reordering. We currently have the new PE Sports Uniform on order as we have sold a lot of it recently which has left our uniform shop quite empty. I have rung this week to find out the whereabouts of our order and it likely to arrive at the end of next week (as it is coming from overseas). The cost of the new PE/Sport Uniform is $29.50 for the Shirt and $23.50 for the Shorts. ($53.00 set) We still have a small amount of the 2nd Hand PE/Sports uniform for sale at reasonable prices ($10 to $15.00 per set mostly) but most of it is well worn and in the larger sizes (Size 1214 and small adult sizes). This could be a good alternative to those of you with older children who will only be at Faith Academy for the next year or so. If you are interested please see Lisa or Philippa in the school office about these.
